Show SIGNS OF THE TIMES IN SALT LAKE. New railroads are coming to Salt Lake City, not to benefit the city, but to benefit the men who invest in the securities of these roads. Men of money read the signs of the times that Utah is to be a great industrial center and that Salt Lake is to be the commercial metropolis metropo-lis of the intermountain region. Reading these signs, they plan to ex-lend ex-lend their iron highways to this point to reap the resultant benefit. That these railroad plans have not all materialized before has been largely, if not entirely, the fault of the people of Salt Lake themselves. Railroads go where there is business to be had freight to be handled and passengers to be carried. They go from one objective ob-jective point to another, seeking en route such territory as will yield approximately certain revenue. Money and not philanthropy is the purpose and hope of railroad builders. The vast resources of Utah have long been recognized. But resources re-sources undeveloped yield no revenue to railroads. The awakening of Salt Lake to the need of industrial develop-' develop-' ment is one of the signs that the railroad builders have been looking lor. That such an awakening has occurred is palpable to the most casual observer. That Salt Lake is on the eve of rapid growth and that industrial development in Utah in the next few years will be marvelously great are signs that are unmistakable. The people themselves them-selves are awakened and with this awakening will come the investment invest-ment of money in enterprises that will build up the community. Out-feide Out-feide people and outside money will not be long in following Buit. - ; This is not a matter of argument, but merely a statement of existing ex-isting conditions. New life and activity are in tne air. The "railroads, present and prospective, will make Salt Lake the true gateway to the coast. United effort will make it the industrial and commercial center of a vast region. |
