Praiseworthy Enterprise TT IT is altogether creditable to Japanese leaders leaders' Jl 1 here and in six near-by near states states- that they are meeting here in a conference called to seek so so- so lt lutio s to problems confronting second generation genera genera- tion Japanese in the United States States' Indeed there is need that means be found for meeting problems facing all Japanese in this country who strive to abide by its laws to work in honorable callings to rear their families and to deserve the advantages and opportunities for which they left their homeland to come here T There ere is no dl disputing the fact that American sympathy in largest part rests with the Chinese in the present conflict in the Orient We should h have ve the intelligence to understand that Japanese Jap Jap- anese living in America have had no part in bringing about the slaughter and destruction visited upon the Chinese just as we should understand understand un un- un- un that the culpability attaches to a militaristic mili mill g government and not to its whole people We should likewise recognize that every tie of ot blood and instinct binds the sympathy of Jap Jap- anese-Americans anese to the cause of their homeland and the fortunes of their kinfolk To do less would be to overlook important fundamentals of Americanism and to invite disparagement of our own claims to reasonableness fairness and justice Nevertheless it is true that in placing our sympathies with China we have permitted an unwarranted state of mind to grow in this country country coun coun- try which has has' posed difficult problems for for- Japanese Japanese Jap Jap- anese dwelling here Some of these problems are imaginary but others are very real Some of th them m are are more unfortunate for ourselves s thian for these Japanese It is both unwholesome and dangerous for us to permit animosity to o breed in America against any nation with which h we are at peace and in addition unjust to let ill-feeling ill extend to include law-abiding law aliens and their descendants abiding on our soil Praise is due western Japanese and Japanese- Japanese Americans who have had any part in organizing ing this conference and due those Ameri American an J i. i 5 1 citizens who are arc cooperating with them To all aU participating in the enU enlightened ent enterprise e Tile The Telegram e extends tends wishes for r an abundant ab success suc success ce cess a In tn attaining the objectives sought ought
