Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablctt Mama, here'.i that man again! Well, folks, the baseball season is fast qoming to a close. As far as Bingham is concerned, we had an up and down season. Our American Legion team won the state championship, but Gemmell club had a bad season. Last Sunday Gemmell's final game of the season with Mtfgna was lost 12-0, making a total of 14 losses and one victory in the last half. The Industrial league as a whole had a good year. Attendance Atten-dance was up all over the circuit. cir-cuit. Provo and Brigham City showed a big increase over last year. Salt Lake, as long as Ihey were in the race, drew well, but when they lost their soldiers sold-iers they didn t have much left in the way of a team and the crowds fell off. Magna won the first half after tying Brigham City in the Tegular Tegu-lar schedule. They won two straight in the playoff for the championship. Magna went along without any so';ier help and they had a good club. Leif (Left) Erickson and Lee Johnson, a right hander, carried the pitching burden. bur-den. Believe me, these two fellows fel-lows know how to pitch. Bill Cowley at third had a good year and the Magna second base combination was the best in the league. Moesser at short and Call at second led the circuit in double plays. This pair made the difference differ-ence between Magna and Brigham Brig-ham City in the playoff. Brigham City could have won both halves had Manager Jacobs got any pitching in the clutches. They lost game after game because be-cause their pitchers couldn't hold a lead, especially in the ninth inning. Provo started well in the first half, but their pitching bogged down. Manager Collins cured that by signing Big Bill Schubell of Kearns, and they are leading the second half by a full game and assured no worse than a tie. They play Magna Sunday. Should Magna win they will play one game for the second half on Monday at Provo. Pinney Beverage of Salt Lake City started the season with most of the South high school championship champ-ionship team. They soon found the league too tough for the youngsters. Skipper Ken Price then signed four boys from Kearns to make the difference. He had Clarence "Hook" Iott and Frank LaManna, pitchers; Bill Woods, catcher, and Jim Acton at first and in the outfield. He used one of the pitchers in the outfield when he wasn't pitching. pitch-ing. The two first mentioned were Big Leapuers and the other two from Double A ball. But in the first half Pinney was too far gone when they joined the club. Pinney lead the league in the second half until the Kearns team went to the national tournament tourna-ment in Wichita. This left Pinney high and dry. Midvale had a good hustling club, but like Gemmell they just didn't have the talent to stay in the race. . Kearns won the state semi-pro semi-pro championship, and went on to place seventh in the national. nation-al. "Hooks" Iott. their big fireball fire-ball left hander. was the outstanding out-standing pitcher in the national meet. So all we have left in baseball is the playoff. And as an umpire I won't try and pick a winner. But you can bank on this: when Magna and Provo tangle it's Lions and Tigers and every man for himself. So until next week, AL r |
