the community chest hest It is isa a powerful force for community solidarity anc and soda social well being Perhaps no activity activity ity of similar proportions is today more nore essential to social order and stability of the community To its voluntary leadership the chest organization owes its strength To the technical knowledge and skill I of the workers in its member agencies the chest owes its efficiency The purposes of the community chest are three-fold three Raising funds each cach year to meet the operating expenses ex cx- of or its member agencies budgeting budgeting eting cling and distributing these funds and social research and planning No money or relief is directly distributed ed to individuals through the chest office for that is the work charged to the member agencies The chest of- of lice flee however houses the social service service service ser ser- vice exchange where all applications for relief are cleared and applicants referred to the proper agency for needed service The Thc 18 agencies of oC the community chest disbursed more than in 1930 While public contribution each year ear has been solicited on a basis of income of the agencies from other sources totals more than annually which explains how the expenditure of a quarter of a million each of the past two years ears was pos pos- sible FOUR POUR CLASSIFICATIONS The 18 agencies of the
