He spoke or tlio uses and compo-hltlon compo-hltlon of wrought, steel aud cast iron, usibg numerous experiments to illustrate his remark". He stated that iron has been known from earliest times in Asb, being rucn-I rucn-I tioned in tho Illblo as having been ued by Tubal Cain. It was used by the Hebrews, and also by the Egyptians in building thu Pyramids, Pyra-mids, and the tinals cf their kings. Iron was used In the early days or Home, swords indjavelius being formed of it, and ships beiughookej together by links of Iron. Still, through difficulty of smelling smell-ing iron, the autie-nts u-ctl it less iu agricultural implements than they used bras. The first account we had of iron being worked was in Arrica, and the mode ued wa similar to that employed at Hie present pres-ent day. Tne Catalan forge, used Iu early days by all civilized nations, aud In u-o in rematu di-trictsiu America and Europe at the present day, was descri'd and Illustrated by diagrams. The lecturer described the rigidity of cat iron, the malleability of wrought iron, and the temper of Heel; and a small forge having been placed in lositiou, by means of this it was shown that tool steel could be made brittle by balng lieated to a read heat anJ then plai.J in water. Cast iron can be united and run Into niouii?, when it expands and fills all the spice. In this Its chief value consists. Sulphur combined with Iron runs off. Following the lecture was a duet by Misses Maud Jljweriug and Jessie Pugh. |
