Show Springville Early Day Marshall Band ... i - it . . . v- v, Pictured above is the old Springville Marshall band which participated in the Jubilee celebration celebrating the 50th anniversary anni-versary of the state July 24, 1897. There were no cars so the band made the trip to the state capitol on the train and upon arrival the few hotels lodging places , were filled so the group camped in an orchard at about First West and First South streets. Their band instruments and camping camp-ing equipment were taken to the city by horse 'and wagon. According to surviving members of the band, the celebration marking the state's 50th birthday was equally as elaborate for those times as that planned for the Centennial this year. Ma ny older citizens will remember most of the band members pictured above from left to right, as follows: Front row Alfred W. Weight, Jim Bryan, Claude F. Weight, Ralph B. Weight, George A. Weight, John Bryan. Back row Milton Brown, Fred Lewis, Elisha Hawkins, Wm. Clyde, Jr., Bill Lewis, Charlie Daley, Jim Lowe, drum major; Frank Parry, Joe Shepherd, Israel Clegg, Parley Fullmer, Tom Brown. - In extreme rear, is seen Hubbard Noakes, Harry Palfreyman, and Benny Wheeler. The picture was submitted by Ralph B. Weight and is the first of a series which the Herald would like to publish weekly during the Centennial year. If you have an old-time picture, bring: it down to the Heral d office, so that all can see "what used to be." The picture will not be marred and will be returned the week after it is published. |
