Show 'FORMER RESIDENT GETS CIVILIAN NAVAL CITATION Robert W. "Bert" Carter, a native na-tive and former resident of this city, has been given a civilian citation ci-tation for meritorious service to the United States Navy during the war period, according to word received here. A P-5 senior civil engineer in charge of the design department and surveying and mapping, both of which comprise the engineering engineer-ing department for the Naval air station and Naval air bases 11th Naval district in Southern California, Cali-fornia, Clark county, Nevada and western Arizona, Mr. Carter resides re-sides at San Diego, Calif., was one of a few who had authority to use secret files and maps while laying out and making up bills of materials for the construction of some of the bases on the Pacific Pa-cific Island. This work was done prior to the time the Americans Ameri-cans had taken the islands from j the Japs. I The citation stated among other oth-er things, that Mr. Carter through exceptional engineering ability, capacity for handling great overloads over-loads of work and by virtue of his outstanding loyalty, integrity and reliability, was of invaluable service. The citation further listed list-ed his duties and accomplishments accomplish-ments and stated that on March 29, 1944, a heart attack from overwork, over-work, forced him to his bed, and he has been in the hospital much of the time since. Mr. Carter graduated from the local high school and attended the U.S.A. C, Logan. He received his degree as a civil engineer from the University of Utah in 1924, and is a World War I veteran. He gives credit to W. W. Clyde of this city and to Ed Kennelley, Sr., for inpiring him to become an engineer. He was employed by Mr. Clyde when he was chief engineer for a coal company in Spring Canyon. He also expressed his appreciaion to J. F. Wingate as a Scout trainer. Mr. Carter is a son of Mrs. Zel-la Zel-la Carter of this city. |
