Show 1 Screen Shorts Now that the war in Europe is over and the war against Japan about to swing into full stride, with its result already apparent, Hollywood is turning its interest to stories with post-war themes, home-coming, etc. MGM has probably the heaviest heav-iest schedule of such stories, a-mong a-mong which are "The Homecoming Homecom-ing of Ulysses," by Sidney Kings-ley Kings-ley and "We Got Back," by Dorothy Doro-thy Thomas." Also, "New Horizons," Hori-zons," which deals with the personal per-sonal perplexities of a couple of discharged Navy friends; "Heajjen On a Picket Fence," "Now That April's Here," and "The Image of Josephine," and "For Better, For Worse." At Anxious to get authentic background shots for his production, produc-tion, "The Robe," Mervyn Leroy wants to take a camera crew to Italy and Palestine and probably will, if the Government permits. When Roddy McDowell went on his recent public appearance tour he had along, as excess baggage bag-gage we know, his teacher, whose expenses he had to absorb as well as paying her $100 a week. All of this was made necessary because of a California law which says all boys and girls under 18 must get their readin,' writin' and 'rithme-tic, 'rithme-tic, movies or no movies. Have you ever counted up the number of stars in Hollywood who started in a band as a stepping-stone to a place before the camera? The latest recruit is Andy An-dy Russell, now playing a stellar role in "The Stork Club". Others include Fred MacMurray, who used to toot a saxaphone, Betty Grable, who sang with Jay Whid-den's Whid-den's dance band, Alice Faye who was soloist with Rudy Vallee's orchestra; or-chestra; Dorothy Lamour, with Herbie Kay's orchestra; Janet Bliar, with Hal Kemp; not to mention Bing Crosby, who was one of Paul Whiteman's "Rhythm Boys." Ginny Simms is expected back in Hollywood momentarily from Broadway for a co-starring role with Charles Cogburn and Robert Paid in"Alibi in Ermine," a comedy with music. Susanna Foster, who had been named for the singing role will do "Once Upon Up-on a Dream," instead. |
