Show Letter From Germany Reveals Atrocities The following letter was written by Captain Quinn Whiting, who has been with the armed forces in Germany for some time. ..It was written before V-E Day, but gives a clear picture of somT of the rrimes committed in that countrv. Somewhere in Germany with the 9th U. S. Army 17 Apr. '45 "I am writing tonight after seeing see-ing with my own eyes one of the most fiendish acts of atrocity that anyone could possibly imagine. To get a clear picture of the story you will have to remember the rapid advance of the Ninth Army after they crossed the Rhine river. riv-er. You will recall that the advance ad-vance north of the Rhur industrial center was very rapid. Looking at a small scale map does not visualize visua-lize clearly the actual distance, but I can assure you that the territory ter-ritory covered is tremendous. Try to visualize the difficulties that an army encounters. Hundreds of cities being captured, with the thousands of civilians to be controlled con-trolled and organized. Thousands of tons of supplies and ammunition ammuni-tion that must be brought up to the troops and to make things really complicated two or three million prisoners of war, political prisoners, and slave laborers being be-ing liberated with intense malice in their hearts toward the Germans Ger-mans who have controlled them for from one to five years This group of people is like a league of nations British, French, Poles, Russians, Dutch, Belgians, Italians Itali-ans and Americans. There is an endless stream of them on the roads. Of course the Americans and British are absorbed into the advancing armies. "As we moved up behind the advancing ad-vancing doughboys to provide hospitalization hos-pitalization as far forward as possible, pos-sible, our reconnaisance officer came up to the front lines and discovered dis-covered a beautiful hospital in the town where we are now located. The doughboys took the town about two hours before he arrived and we followed in to take over the hospital the next day. On the day that we arrived the actual story begins. Letter From Germany Reveals Atrocities (Continued from Page 1) tive. People in the know ask : How do they get that way? . . . Yellow journalism! SIDELIGHTS: The news of President Truman's forthcoming visit to the conference a big boost for the final scene . . . History made while you wait. No wonder the Big Three can't get together for some time now, when the cabinet shake-up came in both U. S. and England on the same day . . . Was it coincidence or? Australia, Belgium and Canada led the fight of the small powers against the idea that the Assembly Assem-bly under Dumbarton Oaks had enough power already . . . They lost their bet. The problem of the joint occupation occu-pation of Germany by the Powers was a snag that disturbed the Dutch delegation ... It should. STACATTOS: Girl taxi-driver: "General Smuts of South Africa is one of the friendliest delegates I have had in my taxi. I wish they were all like him . . . "So do I, lady. Radio Broadcaster: "The conference con-ference is not succeeding on account ac-count of what the delegates are doing but in spite of what has been done." Attorney General R. W. Kenney of California: "Not only should the Gehappo be brought to trial, but all these who financed the war criminals ... It should be done at once, before the evidence vanishes." van-ishes." Peter H. Bergson, chairman Hebrew He-brew Com. of National Liberation: "We believe it is not sufficient merely to devise means of punishing punish-ing aggressor nations. Aggression originates not with the whole peoples peo-ples but with individuals to commit com-mit nations to courses of action." Wisdom. James Abbe, Commentator: "To blame any individual for this war would be to run back as far as the Garden of Eden. We are all to blame." Otherwise, man made war, he will have to make peace, that's the job here. The most significant press conference con-ference we attended for the week was that of the White Russian delegates stern-faced and grim, and no wonder. The Commisar spokesman told us he had seen the dead bodies of thousands of his countrymen, women and children, chil-dren, slaughtered by the enemy. In soft Russian he outlined his pertinent perti-nent points . . . Questions asked: Will Russia allow an exchange of students between both countries, and when? Yes as soon as the war is over in reality . . . How about religious rights? All religious relig-ious bodies will be free to preach later. The Greek church already is functioning and has a religious paper . . . Has Whitle Russia and the Ukraine equal rights with the U.S.R.R.? Yes, and they can pull away any time they desire but they know when they are well off. And now the latest rumor: The Big Three WILL get together soon despite everything which seems to |
