Show SURPLUS PLANES WILL SERVE IN RESEARCH The aviation industry, in conjunction con-junction with the armed services, is embarking on a research program pro-gram to uncover new secrets in design and performance of both military and civilian planes. Thousands of expendable sur-' plus military planes will be used in the scientifically controlled "crash" testing which will accel erate developments in safety and i efficiency. J Initial stages of the project are j being coordinated by the airplane I technical committee of the Aero-I Aero-I nautical Chamber of Commerce. , More than 50 types of structural I and performance tests are planned, plan-ned, including: flight tests under j conditions far exceeding normal requirements to determine performance perfor-mance limits; investigations of engine life at extreme high pow-' pow-' ers; scientifici crashing of radio-controlled radio-controlled or pilot abandoned air-craft air-craft before high-speed cameras to advise pilots on forced landings. |
