Show CATTAIL FLUFF WILL' BE PROCESSED It may surprise those who are familiar with the familiar spikes of cattails to hear that more than 100,000 pounds of catttail fluff is being processed for government needs each month. According to the Chemurgic Digest, Di-gest, there is a possible post-war business for typha, the trade name for the fluff, which is now being used in the production of life preserver pre-server equipment. It can also be used as stuffing and filling for upholstery up-holstery and light weight insulation insula-tion for children's snow suits. Since the cattails are a natural growth the main expense is the cost of harvesting the fluff. One company estimates that as much as 340,000,000 pounds may be gathered per year and that experiments experi-ments will increase the size of the spikes and the quality of the fluff. |
