Show Americanism Essays Win Defense Stamp Prizes 4 The following essays were judged winners in the Junior Chamber of Commerce essay contest on "Americanism," "Am-ericanism," conducted in the junior and senior departments de-partments of the high school. Prizes of $5 each in defense stamps were presented the students in appreciation appre-ciation of their efforts and thoughts on this patriotic theme : I What Lincoln said at Gettysburg. This is a land of a hundred different dif-ferent kinds of people, Men and women from every country coun-try in the world, All living together in the greatest country in the world. All holding hands, All throwing back their shoulders, All bowing their heads And hoping and fighting And praying, Praying anywhere they please, Any church they please, For this is part of America, too, The freedom of worship. They are working, hoping, fighting And praying. Praying that they may Keep this the land of the free And the home of the brave. n "What Is America?" The right to a trial by jury, A chance to give your side, A chance to a fair deal. The right to vote. The right to choose for office The man who would do the job best. He may be your next door neighbor, trie lights, One nation with one thought. The sun is shining brightly in America on Homes along a quiet street, Busy offices, On men singing as they go to and from work. But some places the rays have not reached yet, The slums of our large cities, The men slumped on park benches, The desert wastelands. But they will reach there, They must. America is where you have the right to say What you please When you please, Maybe he once mowed lawns, Or worked in a drug store, Or a gas station Or a meat market. Perhaps the boy next door Will someday be president, Or senator, Or Governor. For some are not born yet And some will never die. Some like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Will live in the heart of every true American Forever. We will always remember Washington crossing the Delaware, |
