Show Century-Fox and will receive Iti after finishing "Hangover Square." Gregar wants to be a comedian and it is likely he will find his chance to be funny on some other lot. 'i Screen The long-established star-system star-system of major studios is taking a fearful beating these days. Not only have nearly a score of outstanding out-standing screen stars announced their plans for running their own producing companies, but practically practi-cally every player of any name value whatsoever is "free-lancing." This show of v independence on the part of players has resulted result-ed in much better motion picture entertainment for the public and a better all-around deal for the stars. Among the more prominent "free-lancers," one might mention Irene Dunne, who started the ball rolling; Charles Boyer, Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, Edward G. Robinson, Marlene Dietrich, Rosaland Russell, Rus-sell, Barbara Stanwyck and Ginger Rogers. Ingrid Bergman and Joan Fontaine are free-lancing stars by reason of their affiliation with David O. Selznick, who "rents them out," at huge profits to other lots. Bob Hope, who recently recent-ly completed his contract with Paramount, is also on the loose and seems to be doing right well by himself. Studios are delighted to learn, via the fan mail route, that their favorite sons who have gone to war, are not being forgotten by the public. As a matter of fact, some of the boys have picked up on their mail count. Tyrone Power, Pow-er, Victor Mature, Henry Fonda have enjoyed sharp increases In their fan mail. Clark Gable's mail jumped 15 per cent after joining up; Jimmy Stewart's is up nearly 10 per cent, and even Mickey Rooney, in service only a short time, finds his letters and photo requests on the increase. Quite a handicap, to begin with, we'd say. Everyone is expecting these days to hear that Clark Gable and Kay Williams have been quietly married. Kay is one of the best-liked best-liked girls in the film colony, is intelligent, modest and very pretty. pret-ty. Katharine Hepburn will blossom blos-som forth in the gayest and most varied costumes she's ever worn on the screen in her current role in "Without Love." Dissatisfied because he was rapidly becoming typed as a "piller," Laird Gregar has asked for his release from Twentieth |
