Show HOUSE HOME Author of Sister Mary'. Kitchen' Spring house cleaning and gardening gar-dening play havoc with my hands so I have followed the advice of Pearl Gray over at Westinghouse in Mansfield, Ohio, and keep a small glass jar of fine corn meal dampened with lemon juice and a few drops of peroxide near my kitchen kitc-hen sink. This mixture rubbed into in-to hands will remove orods, too, such as fish and onions as well as the stains of fruit and toil. Speaking of house cleaning let preparedness be your slogan. Cleaning cloths, polishing cloths, chamois and sponges, metal polish, pol-ish, furniture polish, cleaning paste pas-te or crystals for washing woodwork, wood-work, wallpaper cleaner and floor wax all should be replenished and ready for the spring drive. Every material used in house furnishings needs special treatment. treat-ment. Glass sparkles best if washed wash-ed in warm soap suds and wiped dry without rinsing. Milk glasses as well as crystal should be taken care of this way. Lustre ware should not he washed wash-ed but wiped with a soft clean cloth. Warm water is said to have a deleterious effect, making the lustre less brilliant. Brass and copper are cleaned with a metal polish prepared especially es-pecially for these meals. The old standby of salt and vinegar is effective ef-fective for removing stains but must be washed off immediately or it in itself will discolor the metal. me-tal. Silver needs a smooth polish made exclusively for fine metals. Some grades of pewter respond to this polish and the old-fashioned Britannia ware comes up gleaming after a good cleaning with silver polish. A good furniture polish that cleans as well as polishes is essential es-sential and saves much time and effort. Qnick and easy meals are in demand de-mand with the rush of spring work but appetites need whetting a bit, too, so plan menus carefully with an eye for color as well as taste. Feature salads and early spring vegetables and lighten the meat course by serving fish often. Rhubarb Rhu-barb is plentiful and a perfect accompaniment for fish. Spinach and watercress are compatible with all kinds of fish and sea foods and are at their best in Spring. Horseradish is another Spring tonic and is as good with roast beef as with ham and fish. Prepared horsehadish mixed 1 with prepared mustard and sour cream whipped until firm can be served with beef, ham and fish can be frozen or thoroughly chilled, chill-ed, as most convenient. |
