Five years ago, on July 7th, 1937, Japanese sodiers attacked Chinese troops, precipitating a bloody skirmish for control of the Marco Polo bridge over the Ying-ting Ying-ting River near Peiping. The "incident" resulted in a war that has cost the lives of five million mil-lion Chinese, the scattering of 50,-000,000 50,-000,000 into the interior of the country and the loss of much of the richest provinces of China, including the vital seacoast areas.
