Show Ship With Two Hulls A two-hulled ship the British steamer "Castalia" was designed design-ed after the Indian native outrigger out-rigger canoe! It was one of the strangest ships ever designed, and was launched in 1874 for service on the rough English channel. She had two complete hulls, each 290 feet long with a 20-ft. beam, with a rigid deck supported by arched girders connecting the two hulls. Each half of the strange vessel had its own engines and boilers, and paddles worked in the central waterways between the hulls. Due to her slowness she was discarded-atter .two years' I service. She was designed by Captain Cap-tain Dicey, formerly of the Indian navy, after light Indian outrigger canoes that ride heavy seas with little trouble. o The song "Yankee Doodle" was inspired by the motley appearance of American volunteers at Fort Ticonderoga during the French and Indian war. . |
