Show SOIL EXPERTS MAP EROSION CONTROL PLANS Seeking to establish definite data relative to the checking and controlling of erosion caused by irrigation water, the Utah agricultural agri-cultural experiment station, in cooperation co-operation with the United States soil conservation service, has just instituted a research project under un-der the direction of Willard Gardiner, Gard-iner, soil conservation service collaborator. col-laborator. I David A. Burgoyne, executive ' officer of the experiment station, reports that, "Erosion of irrigated j cropped land is known to be serious ser-ious in many sections of the arid I West. While general ideas as to the methods of control have been developed by actual farm practices and field tests, present knowledge does not permit prediction of the best methods of applying water under new conditions. It is believed be-lieved that the study here proposed pro-posed would provide information by which the irrigation engineer and the farmer could determine in advance what size of irrigation stream could be used on any particular par-ticular slope and soil without danger dan-ger of excessive soil erosion." Studies have been made regarding regard-ing soil erosion in the past but no method of mathematical determination de-termination of the relationship between be-tween slope, quantity of water, and soil characteristics and rate and extent of erosion under irrigation irri-gation has been made. |
