Show At the Tourney Fair Play or Foul? By WOODROW WEIGHT , Springville sofbball teams who have entered previous state tournaments tour-naments and especially the team that entered the touted joust this year at Salt Lake's White Park, are apparently beginning to believe in the adage that you can't beat your opponents when the officials refuse to let you. From reports that have poured in, we are somewhat prone to believe be-lieve that the far-fetched adage seems to have returned at least to the Springville club, if not to other similar outside entrants in the state tourney. To verify our belief further and to specifically mention the unsportsmanlike ''raw deal," let it be known that in the Springville vs. Pinney Beverage game, with the score reading 3-0 in Spring-ville's Spring-ville's favor in the 6th inning, officials of-ficials of the game, apparently through their own initiative or because be-cause of outside pressure, called several obvious "raw decisions" which turned the game in Pin-ney's Pin-ney's favor. To further verify the above statements, Manager Eddie Cran-dall Cran-dall stated that he personally received re-ceived a phone call from the Utah State Softball association secre tary, Sloan, admitting that the local lo-cal club received an unfair deal In the game. Through no fault of theirs, the Pinney Beverage club likewise admitted that "they were sorry they had to win like they did." What with previously reported similar experiences at the state tournaments and this year's trouble, trou-ble, it appears that whoever is to blame the state Softball association associa-tion or others there should be something done to clear up any further recurrences of the unfair practices and give any and all contestants con-testants an equal chance to win the state tourney. |
