Show Democrats Take Lead In National Polls And State Elections Race For Governor Of Utah Is One Of Closest In History, With r Governor Maw Taking Lead Late W ednesday President Roosevelt will take the office of president of the United States for the fourth conecutive term as a result of the national na-tional election Tuesday, defeating his opponent, Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, by a wide margin. ,,.,.,.. Trie only contest worm numis in Utah's general election was that between the governor candidates. All other issues seemed cut and dried with Democratic candidates taking a lead in early counting of votes and remaining in the lead until the end. However, as tabulations tabu-lations came in after the closing of the polls, Governor Maw would be leading on one count only to trail behind Candidate Lee in the next. When the Herald went to press late Wednesday afternoon, Maw was leading his Republican opponent oppon-ent by a margin of 1,696 votes and there were forty small districts yet to be reported. According to announcement by party leaders, each candidate will not be known definitely until Monday, when the county commissioners make a canvass can-vass of the votes. While the soldier vote could make some difference in the national na-tional election, it would not affect that of the governor, as all soldier votes for the governor which were in at the designated time, have been counted. At press time Wednesday, Maw had polled 118,204 votes to Lee's 117,734. It was one of the closest political contests conducted In the state for many years. In tabulating the votes, however, howev-er, it was noted that every district in Springville, except Districts 2 and 8, voted for Lee, and Utah county voters also favored the Republican Re-publican candidate. |
