Annual after-school sleeping party held la't Thursday evening at the home of Miss Ruth Crandall. The group, comprising some twenty-five members, early in the evening attended a picture show ad later enjoyed a progressive luncheon. They then returned to tne Crandall home to slumber. delicious breakfast was served at'stnall tables on the spacious lawn, with new members of the club acting as hostesses. The partv also featured the election of' new officers. Miss Jacqueline Senior was elected club president; Miss Lois Johnson, vice-president; Miss Carma Crandall. Cran-dall. secretary; Miss Catherine Holl'ey, treasurer, and Miss Ranae Davis, reporter. CART) CLUB PARTY AT KEELEYS Mrs. Verl Mann was hostess at a very enjoyable party for members mem-bers of the Old Friends club at Keeleys in Provo last Friday night. Early in the evening a delicious deli-cious cold plate luncheon -was served and later progressive 500 was played. High score prize for the games went to Mrs. Blanch Tipton, the guest prize to Mrs. Tern Crandall, and the consolation consola-tion to Mrs. Fay Hancock. In attendance at the party were the following: Mrs. Gertrude Clements, Cle-ments, Mrs. Reta Kelley, Mrs. Blanch Tipton, Mrs. Lillie Hume, Mrs. Odessa Child, Mrs. Almina Madsen, Mrs. Elnora Pennington, Mrs. Gladys Gardner and Mrs. Marguerite Gardner of Spanish Fork, Mrs. Fern Crandall and Mrs. Fay Hancock, the latter four ladies la-dies being special guests. GROUP EX.JOYS CAXYON SUPPER A well arranged supper "was enjoyed en-joyed by a group of friends in Provo canyon Saturday night. More than 300 relatives and 1 friends attended the beautifully arranged wedding reception given for Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Woodrow 1 Fillmore, nee Mary Huntington, in 1 the First ward amusement hall Thursday evening. ' The bride-elect, a daughter of 1 Mrs. Mae Huntington of this city, and Mr. Fillmore, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Fillmore of Provo, Pro-vo, were married in the Salt Lake 1 temple on Wednesday. The bride was charmingly gowned gown-ed in white silk marquesette over satin with finger tip veil of white net, lace-edged and caught to her head with a tiara of seed pearls. She carried a bouquet of pink rose buds. Mrs. L. D. Jones of Tooele was matron of honor and was attired in pale blue satin with a corsage of Talisman roses. Miss Pauline Clyde of this city and Miss Venice Col'fman of Provo were bridesmaids brides-maids and wore beautiful pastel ; shaded formals with gardenia cor-! cor-! sages. Little Jaunita Madsen and John Earl Lewis of Provo were other attendants. Martell Bird of Provo was best man. Others in the receiving line were , the mother of the bride, who wore blue lace, and Mr. and Mrs. Fillmore, Fill-more, the latter being attired in black lace and chenille, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Madsen and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Collins of Provo. Roe Thorn acted as master of ceremonies and announced a splendid program to feature the evening's entertainment. Dancing and dainty refreshments were also enjoyed. The serving room, prettily dee-orated dee-orated for the occasion in pink and white, was in charge of Mrs. Ford Burt of Springville and Mrs. George Duke of Provo. Mrs. John T. Burt, Mrs. Taylor Burt and Mrs. W. E. Lewis of Provo presided pre-sided in the gift room. The hall was beautifully decorated decor-ated with a profusion of roses, ferns, palms and other seasonal plants and flowers. The couple plan to take a short wedding trip and will then make their home in Springville. FRIENDS ENJOY CANYON OUTING A group of friends motored to Beckstead recreational site in Spanish Fork canyon last Friday afternoon and enjoyed a delicious 'Canyon lunch. Mrs. Beth Dallin of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Julia Dallin and their families. MOTHER GIVES BIRTHDAY PARTY Miss Shirley Evans was honored honor-ed with a party given by her mother,. mo-ther,. Mrs. Lester Evans, on the occasion oc-casion of her eleventh birthday Monday. Mrs. Melvin Woodrow Fillmore, nee Mary Huntington Mrs. Virginia Harker has just returned from a vacation, trip spent with Mr. Harker in Grand Canyon. Mr. .and Mrs. J. M. Peterson and daughter, Margery, Mr. and Mrs. M. T. Armstrong of Santa Ana, Calif., and Mrs. Claude Smith of Annaheim, Calif., have returned to their homes following a visit in Springville with Mr. and Mrs. J. Emmett Bird and other relatives rela-tives in various parts of the state. Mr. and Mrs. William Hill and family of Ogden, were visiting Sunday at the home of Mrs. Hill's father, J. H. Manwaring, and other relatives in Springville. Mrs. Glenn Dallin of Long Beach, Calif., is spending a few days in Springville with relatives and friends. She came especially to attend the Primary and M. I. A. conventions in Salt Lake City. Miss Betty Harmon, who has been with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Best, has gone to Walla Walla, Wash., for an indefinite indef-inite visit. She was accompanied by -her father, Alonzo Harmon. FRIENDS GIVE BIRTHDAY PARTY In, honor of Miss Elaine Cher-rington Cher-rington on the occasion of her birthdap, a group of friends entertained en-tertained at a paTty on Saturday night at the home of Miss Clara Bird. Music and social chatting , were enjoyed, together with a delicious de-licious "pot luck" supper. Attending were Miss Shirley Barrett, Miss LaRae Thorpe, Miss Mary Cameron, Miss Anita Pal-freyman, Pal-freyman, Miss Maurme Child, Miss Clara Bird, . and the guest of honor. SEWING AND LUNCHEON FEATURES CLUB MEET A pleasant time was spent by members of the Busy Circle club on Friday afternoon, when they were .entertained at the home of Mrs.' Elsie Childs. Sewing preceded a delicious hot dinner served to the following: Mrs. Hattie Allen, Mrs. Nell Ber-tlesen, Ber-tlesen, Mrs. Ada Lee., Mrs. Sylvia Allen, Mrs. Madge Allen, Mrs. Ethel Phillips, Mrs. Blanch Nielson, Niel-son, Mrs..Audra .Jensen and Mrs. Margaret Olauson, the latter two being special guests. The next meeting of the club was announced for June 21, to be held at the home of Mrs. Sylvia Allen. LEGION AUXILIARY HOLDS MONTHLY MEET Members of the American Legion Le-gion auxiliary held their regular monthly meeting last Wednesday night at Memorial hall. Glen Law entertained with piano selections, Miss Melba Merritt gave vocal solos and Miss Lucille Oakley entertained en-tertained with a reading. A business busi-ness meeting followed the program pro-gram and officers for next year were elected. Next month's meeting meet-ing was announced to feature the installation of new officers and the selection of delegates and alternates al-ternates to the state convention in August at Ogden. At the close of the program tasty refreshments were served. Hostesses for the meeting were Mrs. Ella Crandall, Mrs. Ada Barron and Mrs. Vivian Johnson. 4-H PEPPY SEVEN CLUB ORGANIZES The first meeting of the Peppy Seven 4-H club was held recently at the home of Mrs. Edith Blanch-ard, Blanch-ard, leader. Officers were elected as follows: President, Nana Lee Reynolds; vice-president, Coleen Callister; secretary, Carma Mendenhall; Men-denhall; treasurer, Phylis Reynolds; Rey-nolds; reporter, Marjorie Davis; work chairman. Norma Nell Straw; song and cheer leader, Anna An-na Lee Walker. Local Students At the Universities Pauline Clyde of Springville recently re-cently received her University oi Utah award pendant from the student stu-dent activity manager's office, after af-ter the mounting of an additional jewel, an award for extra-curricular activity of merit during the past school year. The pendants are gold and presented by the Associated Asso-ciated students for the winning of the first award. To signify presentation presen-tation of additional awards, rubies and diamonds are mounted on the pendant. Miss Clyde won her award for participation in the girls' glee organization. or-ganization. She is a junior at the U, studying speech, music and English in the school of education. educa-tion. She is a graduate of the Springville high school and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Clyde. Miss Jettie Jacob, drum major at the local high school last year, has won high honors for her outstanding out-standing work as drum major of the Compton Tartor College band the past year at Compton, Calif.'' When the college held its annual an-nual honor banquet, Miss Jacob was presented a silver cup for her fine work. Engraved on the cup was the inscription,, "High Excellence Excel-lence in Drum Majoring, 1940." Mr. McDowell, a noted music critic and member of the Southern South-ern California Music association, remarked when he saw the Springville Spring-ville girl lead the college band at the band parade at Rivers Field: "Of all band and durm majors I have judged, never have I seen a drum major handle a band with such natural ease and ability as Miss Jacob." Also at the banquet, Miss Jacob received a certificate for the solo work she had done with the college col-lege "A" Capella Choir. Miss Jacob is a daughter of Mrs. Jettie Jacob of Springville, now residing in California. LOCAL GIRL TO WED SALT LAKE MAN Mrs. Earl Blackett of this city announces the engagement and forthcoming marriage of her daughter, Miss Fern Blackett, to Johnnie Johnston of Salt Lake City. The ceremony will be performed per-formed June 2 9, at the home of the bride-elect's aunt, Mts. R. R. Chamberlain, in Salt Lake. Immediately after the marriage, the couple will be honored at a reception at the aunt's home, to which a number of Springville relatives and friends plan to attend. at-tend. Mrs. Adelaide JJalton and her daughter, Mariam, of Los Angeles, Calif., have been visiting a few days with Mrs. Mary J. Flnley and family in Springville. Mrs. Richard Stewart has had as her guest the past week, her daughter, Mrs. Edna " Cooper, of Los Angeles, Calif., and her daughter-in-law, JVfrs. Joseph Stewart, also of Los Angeles. Mrs. Richard Huntington and daughters, Luella and Dickie, returned re-turned Sunday from a two weeks': vacation trip to Vernal to visit their husband and father. Mr. and Mrs. George Murdock and three, daughters of Los Angeles, An-geles, .Calif., are visiting Mr. Murdochs Mur-dochs mother, Mrs. Charles Con-over, Con-over, at the Murdock ranch In Hobble Creek canyon, and with other relatives and friends in this city. They plan to be here until June 21. Frank L. Gunnell of Huntingon Park, Calif., is spending a short vacation with his mother, Mrs. Charles Conover, and other relatives rela-tives and friends here. Mrs. William I. Nbakes Is visiting visit-ing her daughter, Thelma, and her son, Ralph Noakes, in Oakland, Calif. Miss Jane Wainwright is spending spend-ing a few weeks with an aunt in Nevada. Miss Fern Ostler, Miss Virginia Simkins and Miss Zelma Thorpe left Saturday on an extended vacation va-cation trip to the eastern states. They plan to spend a short time in Chicago, Washington, D. 0 and at the fair in New York City. They will return by way of the southern south-ern states, visiting places of interest inter-est enroute. Mrs. R. L. Althouse of Cleveland, Cleve-land, Ohio, is spending several weeks with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. George A. Anderson. She is accompanied by her two daughters, daugh-ters, Laura Nell and Sharon Lee Althouse. -Mrs. Mary Giles and son of Los Angeles, Calif., are vacationing I with relatives and friends in Springville. ... Mrs. Nellie Burt and daughter have gone to Las Vegas, Nev., to spend the summer with Mr. Burt, employed on road construction work near there. ... Mr. and Mrs. Leon Bird returned return-ed Tuesday from a vacation trip in the east. They stopped at Lansing, Lan-sing, Mich., to purchase a new car, and then visited the world's fair at New York and with friends in Washington, D. C. On their return home they spent a short time in Chicago, 111., and Detroit, Mich. They were accompanied on the trip by Mr. and Mrs. Kelsey Hill of Salt Lake City, who also purchased pur-chased a new car. They were gone more than two weeks. ... Miss Pearl Starr plans to leave Friday, in company with friends from Ogden and California, on a two months' trip to Old Mexico. |
