Show MUSICAL EVENT MERITS ARE EXPLAINED By Howard Salisbury Standing prominently superior among musical events in Utah during dur-ing recent years, is the annual Chamber Music Festival featuring the famous Roth String quartet and sponsored by Brigham Young university summer school. This extraordinary ensemble of artists is now midway in a course of fine concerts which began June 17 in the Provo tabernacle, and which will conclude Friday, June 21. The concerts begin at 8 o'clock. String quartet music, which comprises a large part of the genre termed "Chamber Music," is among the greatest artistic experiences ex-periences in the literature of music. mu-sic. It is, however, rarely heard in a manner which commends it to the general public because of the fact that few gToups of musicians musi-cians are capable of achieving an authentic rendition. Only the most gifted players under the leadership leader-ship of a master can do justice to the magnificent quartet of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Tschaikowsky, Brahms, and other supreme composers. com-posers. It is because of the rarity of such an experience that all who cherish the best in art should be grateful to the university for bringing the unequalled and unexcelled un-excelled Roth quartet within easy i access. There is not a city in the United States that could do more to open to the understanding of every individual the works of the masters. One marvels that four personalities person-alities possessing the charm of these Hungarian musicians could merge in one glorious singing soul playing with a unity that could come only through complete concentration to their art. While the opportunity abides, Springville Spring-ville should be well represented in the audience in the tabernacle during dur-ing the remaining evenings of the festival. Thereafter, the annual an-nual event would be anticipated with a full measure of enthusiasm. |
