Show Women's Legislative Council Hears ' Pros, Cons on Aid to Education a j. Legislative Council ladies heard the pros and cons on federal aid for education as the White House conference on education was the subject discussed last Wednesday at the Provo Women's Club House with Mrs. Archie Brockbank presiding. pre-siding. Mrs. Ernest L. Wilkinson of the education committee was in charge. Speakers who discussed the subject sub-ject were Orville Gunther, Lehi, v - Utah State Representative; Allan West, Salt Lake City, executive secretary of UEA and Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, BYU president. Mr. Gunther introduced the problem and explained some of the reasons of President Eisenhower for calling the White House conference con-ference in December. In his talk he included material which furnished fur-nished background information of the topic. Mr. West defended the point for federal aid for education and explained ex-plained the two bills which are now in congress proposing federal aid. He said that the bill which the senate sen-ate was now considering is spun-sored spun-sored by President Eisenhower. He said, that Utah had not accepted its responsibility toward education and that it was possible to have federal aid without federal control. Dr. Wilkinson defended the opposing op-posing view of no federal aid for education. He stated that the money for education doesn't come from the government but from the people and that help should come from local and state sources. He also stated that he is in favor of supporting education in Utah. He said that aid means control and cited instances of control such as the national parks, highways, and forests. He quoted Grover Cleveland, Cleve-land, "The people should support the government and not the government gov-ernment the people." Resolution paying tribute to Mrs. Lottie Worthen was read during dur-ing the meeting and a minute of silence was also observed. Hostesses Hostes-ses were from Payson. |
