Show Recruiting Day for Naffcna! Guard Scheduled for Sat.; Eight Men deeded Mayor A. W. Cherrington today called on the citizens of Springville to "support wholeheartedly" the one-day recruiting drive of the National Guard,. saturday, .b eoruary i. The drive is designed to help meet the national quota of 75,000 new guardsmen this fiscal year. The goal set for the campaign here is 8. - Mayor Cherrington said that while the total strength of the National Na-tional Guard is now the highest in history, more members are needed need-ed "in line with present policy of strengthening our reserve forces so that we will not have to support indefinitely a large, active military establishment." In connection with the National Guai'd one-day recruiting drive on February 18, 2nd Lt. Kenneth G. Larsen, commander of 116th Engineer En-gineer Company (Light Equipment), Equip-ment), today emphasized the importance im-portance of gflardsmen between 17 and 18 years old volunteering volunteer-ing for six months of active duty training with the army. "While a National Guardsman is not required under the provisions of RFA 55 to take this six months of basic training," Lt. Larsen said, "such training is available to him. Not only does such training reduce the time a young man must seive in the ready reserve, but it helps open the way for more rapid promotion pro-motion in the National Guard, for a commission, and for appointment to the Military Academy." A high school student may enlist in the National Guard any time after he reaches age 17 and put off taking his six-month training until after he graduates, but not later than his 20th birthday, Lt. Larson stated. |
