(Mormon) church temple will be built at Idaho Falls at a cost of approximately approxi-mately $250,000, church leaders lead-ers announced here today. David O. McKay, second counselor to the first presidency of the church, said today that negotiations for land at Idaho Falls had been completed, and that church officers would proceed pro-ceed immediately to have plans drawn up. Ovcc Civy Blocl: The r.ew building will cover slightly more than a full city' block, on a site near the Idaho Falls L D. S. hospital overlooking overlook-ing the Snake river. No dninite architectural plans for the structure have as yet been drawn up. "Whether the church will invite architects to submit plans, or whether the church will select its own architects is still a matter of conjecture," McKay said. "At any rate, we shall make all possible speed to get plans drawn and approved and construction con-struction started as soon as humanly hu-manly possible." Commenting on tentative plans, McKay said the new structure would not be as expensive as others built recently, but would be "entirely adequate" for church needs, and "as nearly structurally perfect" as it can be made. According to a telegram confirming con-firming the selection, sent to L. G. Ball, president of the Idaho Falls church stake, the city has pledged money necessary for purchase pur-chase of the site. "We considered several locations loca-tions in Idaho," McKay said, "among them Boise, Pocatello, Rexburg, and others, but after mature consideration we finally decided on the Idaho Falls site." First In Idaho The temple will be the first of its kind in Idaho. At present, Idaho c'hurch members are forced to go to the church's Logan. Utah, temple for ordination and other work, sanctioned only when performed in a temple. Construction will be undertaken as a part of the church's social security program. The Idaho temple will be the tenth such building erected by the L. D. S. church since its organization. organi-zation. The church now maintains tempos at Salt Lake City, St. George, Utah, Logan, Utah; Card-ston, Card-ston, Canada; Mesa, Arizona; Manti, Utah; Laie, Hawaii; and at Kirtland, Ohio. McKay said that these temples, with the great structure at Nau-voo, Nau-voo, 111., since destroyed, represent repre-sent a church investment "well over" $10,000,000. The Salt Lake City temple alone cost more than $4,000,000. |
