Show HOPE FOB PEACE IS Japanese Ready To Bfinpj Another An-other Division of 10,000 Men if Necessary; Casualties Casual-ties At Shanghai Severe. SHANGHAI, Wednesday, March 2 (U.R) "Peace" conversations con-versations continued today while the Chinese and Japanese Japa-nese armies continued locked in a deadly struggle along the Shanghai front from Chapei to Tazang. No indication of success in the negotiaL.ons was shown. In fact, it was understood the Japanese were bringing in another division of 9.000 to 10,000 men shortly, having already landed the 11th division to reinforce the ninth. Nelson T. Johnson, American minister, boarded the U. S. cruiser Houston during the night and it was believed Yosuka Hatsuoka, the Japanese spokesman, also was aboard for a conference. The fighting Tuesday, which continued con-tinued through the night, was fierce and destructive. Japanese hurled their strength of airplanes, artillery, tanks and machine guns against the Chinese lines north and west of the city, battering their way through for some gains but failing to dislodge the Chinese from, the beleaguered village of Tazang. Japanese casualties since the start of the Shanghai campaign were estimated at 1,824, including 219 killed, while it was believed the Chinese, military and civilian, would be many times more, perhaps per-haps approaching 10.C00.
