Show N. J. Governor Sets $10,000 Reward For Criminals' Capture $50,000 Ransom Is Sought By Kidnapers of Famous Child; Lindbergh Aids in Search; Mother Dears Up Utavely. HOPEWELL, N. J., March 2 (U.R) Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Jr., lihiti-eyed and fair- headwl :;0-ninnlli ;-ohi child of Col. and Mrs. Lindbergh, was hold today for ,f,u,u00 ransom. .Seized in his crib last night as he 'lay slumbering and ill or a cold, the baby was taken away by kidnapers, one of whom is believed to be a woman. Snairh Da he From Crib With cold daring the actual kidnaper crept up a short sectional ladder" into the second floor nursery sometime between be-tween 7::i0 and 10 p. rn. last night, took Ihe'ehiid down the ladder, and left behind the ransom demand. This note, demanding the $50,000 for the child's freedom, free-dom, was reported to have said in substance: "We will be back to morrow (Wednesday) to talk business. busi-ness. Don't talk to the police or the papers." Col. Lindbergh, grim and reticent, aided in searching tor the kidnapers, and was represented as ready person dlv to enter direct negotiations for the child's return In fact, it was stated authoritatively that "if the mean-and mean-and occasion tor doing so are made known to Lindbergh he would pay the kidnapers for return of the baby." " ' Meantime, the kidnaping created a worldwide sensation. Thousands Join In Search Literally thousands of police and state troopers were put on alarm guard, watching highways and state and national na-tional boundary lines. Over the teletype wires of the east-em east-em states and up along the Canadian border flashed word that one of the nation's most famous babies had been stolen. The kidnapers apparently had not realized the furore and resentment their deed would cause. Police everywhere went to work with a will to come up with the kidnapers, while Gov. A. Harry Moore of New Jersey offered a $10,000 reward, and the federal departments of justice, commerce and treasury in Washington, offered to do all within I heir power to track down the criminals. Aviators Offer Services Aviators from many parts of the country offered their services, and an air comrade was sent aloft this morniny to see if from the skies he could see anything along the roadways of value to the search. The commerce department was ready also to help with pilots. Meantime, Mrs. Lindbergh, deeply stirred, bore up with the courage of a Spartan mother. Mother Shows Courage The first word prostrated her, but it was not long before be-fore she was exhibiting tl.o same courage as her hushand, and she helped authorities. Once she joined searchers lor a short period. Her burden was all the greater for she had been treating treat-ing the child several days because of a cold. And the kidnapers kid-napers without even trying to catcluup some quilts, dragged the baby off, clad only in its "sleeper." Moreover, Mrs. Lindbergh Lind-bergh is again an expectant mother. |
