Show SPRINGVILLE lllTSPiJ That the influence of the art ! spirit in Springville is spreading and affecting hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people outride of our city is shown in an interesting letter let-ter from Walter E. Baum, of.Sel-lersvijle, of.Sel-lersvijle, Pa. Mr. Baum has exhibited ex-hibited for many years in the Springville gallery and has always shown a deep interest in the pro- ject here. i Last year he decided to follow the example set in Springville and ' to start a similar movement in his own state. Accordingly, as a be- ! ginning, he prepare.) a one-man exhibit of thiity-five large paintings paint-ings which he circulated among the Philadelphia high schools and junior high schools. The exhibit was left in each school for a period of one month, and met with unprecedented un-precedented enthusiasm and success, suc-cess, he reports. Not contented to confine his efforts ef-forts to the schools of Philadelphia where the pupils have numerous opportunities to visit the large art galleries of the city, he went to the head of the art department of public instruction to seek the aid of that authority in his spread of the gospel of bauty. Acting upon Mr. Baum's suggestion a circulation circula-tion exhibition of paintings was arranged and sent to the rural schools o'f the state. This exhibit. Mr. Baum : states, has becH -'sent into many districts where, in all probability, the children had never ! before seen an original oil painting. Mr Baum further expresses hia interest in the Springville project and his gratitude for this example 1 of what can bn done in the develop- ! ment of ait appreciation among the boys and girls of our schools- j Walter E. Baum is a pupil of j Trego and of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, of which ! institution he i.i a member. He has received numerous awards and medals and has besn represented in many galleries and exhibits. Among his honors are; the award of the Sesnan medal by the Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1925; represented in the Hazelton high school, Hazelton, Pa.; Irene Leach Art association, Norfolk, Virginia; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.3 Fellowship Collection; Pennsylvania Stale College; and Tuskegce Institute of Tuskcgce, Alabama. i |
