Show MKHAND' WRITERS ARE YOUNG GIRLS Pleasant Grove Maidens Fall Into Toils of Law As Result Of Prank at Expense of Teacher; Given Warning Believing that much fun would j develop out of a series of black- j hand letters, but failing to realize the seriousness of their adventure, , five girls ranging from 15 to 17 years of age of prominent Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove families, were taken into custody Saturday by Sheriff J. D. Boyd, charged with issuing two blackhand warnings to H. E. Johnson, John-son, woodwork teacher of the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove high school. Skull and Crossbones The first communication was sent to Mr. Johnson about a week or ten days ago. It was written in big red letters on the page of a note-l.r note-l.r ok, and was decorated in numerous numer-ous places with ths skull and rros-tones. rros-tones. The uote read as follows: "You are bemg watched (Skull and crossbones.) Always beware! Your lives are in danger. We will visit you soon. The T. T." meaning (Tenth Tribe). The second warning, which reached the Johnson home a week later read: "Second Warning. Beware! ! We are coming soon. One more warning; warn-ing; Trouble is on the way. Take care." While the Johnson family did not feel any too easy about the first letter, they concluded it was written writ-ten in fun, and paid no further attention at-tention to it. The second letter, with a warning that a third one would follow, disturbed members of the family, and Mr. Johnson concluded con-cluded to call in the officers, who were not long in apprehending the girls. When taken to Provo Saturday and questioned by Sheriff Boyd and attaches of the sheriff's office, the girls declared that they did not know that they were committing any crime. Their only motive was to watch the reaction . of such anonymous communications. This, they considered, would afford them much fun. ,:J,, . . ; .. -.
