First Ward 4 1 .800 Third Ward 3 2 .600 Mapleton 3 3 .500 Second Ward 1 5 .167 The champion team of the Spring-ville Spring-ville American Legion baseball league has been given assurance that it will be given an opportunity to enter the state finals to be held in Salt Lake City, August 6, 7, and 8. according to word received by R. B. Maughn, chairman of the baseball base-ball committee of the Springville post, from the office of the state adjutant. The crucial game of the season will be played on the Jefferson school park Saturday afternoon, July 14, beginning at 5 oclock, at which time the First ward will meet the Third. Should the former beat the Third warders, they will have clinched the championship of the American Legion post No. 28, Junior Jun-ior baseball league. Although handicapped at times by the absence of players, the First ward boys have played good consistent con-sistent ball, Captain Weight, twirler for this nine, having had good support sup-port considering these handicaps. Mapleton started out strong and have some good men in pitchers, LeRoy and Bills. Olson of Mapleton Maple-ton and Mendenhall and Holley have all played consistent ball. With Kirkham, Hughes, the Spaf-ford Spaf-ford boys, Lyail and Packard, the Third ward has a strong combination, combina-tion, and are expected to give the First ward no end of trouble on Saturday evening. Winning of Saturday's game by the Third ward will place them in tie with the First for the league leadership. . , , 1 , 1 The sqcond ward boys have been badly handicapped py players hav-. Crandall has., pitched many good games and with better organized support the Second ward would, have .been nearer the top of the percentage column. This money has been raised by subscription sub-scription from the business men, which amount was matched by the city. "We would appreciate better support sup-port from the fans," says Mr. Maughn, who declares that the . youngsters have played some real thrilling games. |
