Show IPRAISES CITY OPERATION IN SPRINGVILLE Garret Wilkin Speaker at Meeting of Springville Kiwanis Club. The future prosperity of Utah as effected by the coming of the Columbia steel plant to Utah county was the topic of an address given by Garrett Wilkin of Salt Lake City, manager of the Cullen Manufacturing Manu-facturing . company, before the Springville Kiwanis club nt the weekly luncheon held nt the Third ward amusement hall Thursday evening, June 12. Mr. Wilkin said : "Great financial prosperity comes through . three stages of development ; first, agriculture agri-culture ; second, mining, and third, manufacturing. During the first two stages wealth is derived chiefly chief-ly through the export of raw materials. ma-terials. "Utah has passed through the first two stages of this development, and Is now entering upon the third. The foundation of this great Industrial Indus-trial growth is laid in the Columbia Colum-bia steel plant, and with the coming com-ing of this third stage, Utah has achieved economic independence. I believe this part of the country will grow and prosper faster in the next 20 years than any other part of the United States. Our material prosperity pros-perity seems assured." Mr. Wilkin referred to the Steel: day celebration of June 7, and said he was very much impressed with the program as carried out. "It gave new interest and new courage to everybody in the state," he said. He praised the co-operative spirit between Springville and Provo that made the joint celebration the success suc-cess that it was. "Ordinarily we lack in co-oper-lation," he said. "We should forget these community jealousies; one group of people trying to prosper at the expense of the other. A competitor's com-petitor's loss is not my gain," he continued ; "any misfortune in one community will be reflected in an- other. Our interests are common." Mrs. Norman Atkinson of Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Cora Thorn Bird gave vocal solos and both responded re-sponded to encores. Committee reports were given by Ray L. Done, M. E. Crandall, Jr., and J. F. Mendeuhall.
