Show Herald boasts nevj Photo-Lathe Publisher Harrison Conover and his son, Martin Conover, with a company representative in the accompanying photograph, photo-graph, look over the new Photo-Lathe electronic engraving machine installed this week at the Art City Publishing Co. (The Springville Herald). The modern new piece of equipment equip-ment is indicative of the constant con-stant efforts of the local printing establishment to keep abreast of the times by employing em-ploying the finest and newest methods known to the printing print-ing and publishing business. The new machine is an ele.c-tronically-c ontrolled lathe which makes engravings direct from copy. The Photo-Lathe makes possible the production of half-tones of high quality, on metal plates. It has a special spe-cial optical system, which makes plates from different kinds of original copy, both colored and black and white. It can flip copy to make it face right or left. It can produce pro-duce beautiful effects by use of special backgrounds such as wallpaper, cloth, gift wrapping and lace to produce dramatic, eye-catching reproductions. The Springville Herald will use the new machine in the reproductions re-productions of pictures, a number num-ber of which were made on it this week. It will also be used in many other phases of printing print-ing by the Art City Publishing Publish-ing Co. One of the features of this machine is its ability to make color plates without a knowledge know-ledge of how it works because be-cause the skill is built into the machine. But, for those who are interested: A beam of light from a small bulb hits a mirror set at a 45-degree angle in the optical system, is focused as a spot on the revolving copy through a lens system. A second sec-ond system of lenses cut into the center of the first system reads a pin-point of light in the center of the spot, projecting project-ing the reflected light back up the barrel through a hole in the mirror to a photo-multiplier tube. The Photo-Lathe whi,ch is new in these parts.was shipped to Springville from LeSalle, 111., near Chicago. An invitation invita-tion is extended to townspeople to visit the Springville Herald and watch ttie new equipment , To make room for the Photo-Lathe, considerable remodeling remodel-ing and redecorating has just been completed in the Herald office and shop. |
