Show THE FRENCH ALLIANCE. The senate judiciary committee- by unanimous vote lias decided that tho proposed treaty guaranteeing immediate imme-diate assistance of the United' States to Franco in the event of an unprovoked unpro-voked attack by Germany is constitutional constitu-tional and not contrary to American fundamental law or the treaty-malting powers of the president. This so-called alliance to which Great Britain is a party has been widely discussed, dis-cussed, a remarkable degree of misinformation mis-information concerning the treaty developing de-veloping in unexjected quarters early in the discussion. For one thing tho agreement was hotly denounced as an nnrrnnnintit to hpcnniinfr involved in o--c - o entangling alliances just now a much-touted much-touted bugaboo. The pact merely means what it says, that in event of an unprovoked attack on France by Germany, Ger-many, Great Britain and the United States shall see that the Germans aro kept where the- belong. Great Britain promptly approved the agreement and the presumption is that, having discovered dis-covered that no American rights aro jeopardized by tho treaty, the senate of the "United Slates will in due season ratify the instrument. The deliberations in the senate committee com-mittee were somewhat prolonged, but it is gratifying to learn on tho authority au-thority of these eminent inquisitors that there is nothing in this "triple alliance" which is likely to cost tluo great American eagle any of his tail feathers. |
