Show ipSSt French Minister Says Republic Re-public Should Share Proportionately Pro-portionately With Italy. By EDWIN L. JAMES. (New York Times Cable, Copyright.) PARIS, Dec. 21. Pierre Du Fuy, minister min-ister of marine transport, in a letter to Premier Clemenceau, charges that prior to October 11 England concluded a separate sep-arate and secret agreement with Italy, by the terms of which Italy would receive fromx the allies' pool of German ships fult reparation for all tonnage she lost during the war if the Home government gave its i assent to the Anglo-American compact of last May. M. Du Puy says it has been decided to give Japan a part of the German shipping. He calls attention to the fact that Italy and Japan have both recently agreed to the arrangement between Wilson and Uoyd George. The letter explains why France has re-l re-l fused to give her assent to this agreement... agree-ment... France. lost 910,000 tons of ship ping during the war. Under tho proposed pro-posed settlement she will- receive 250,000 tons of German shipping. It Is true that America will get more tonnage than she lost, but that is because America keeps the German ships seized in her ports. But when it comes to dividing .up the rest the French government wishes to know why Italy should get full reparation for her 700,000 tons lost and France gets only one-fourth of hor losses. M. Du Puy explains frankly that this situation is responsiblo for France's refusal re-fusal to agree to the Anglo-American plan. And, therefore, the division of German Ger-man tonnage ia now an unsettled matter. The French government appears determined deter-mined to get as good a settlement as Italy gets. I |
