"The cries of the man and t e girl, 2i0 yards off shore, were heard on the beach and a crowd of several hundred hun-dred persons soon assembled. Among them was Howes, who was in his bathing suit. He plunged into tho surf, which was running ten to twelve feet high, and with the greatest great-est d: ffi cully reached the girl.
