Show COAL IN CHILE. The recent discovery of several new coal deposits in Chile will tend to decrease de-crease tho demand upon coal produced in the United States, since our exports of coal to that country have been of considerable proportions. Of courfe, it will take time to develop tho new fields, but when tho mines arc put in operation, they will yield a quantity sufficiently large lo materially affect the fuel situation. Las Ultimas Xotieias, A'alparaiso, reports several new beds in southern Chile. The first of these fields is near La Union, where the quality of the coal is said to be excellent. Eeports indicate indi-cate that 400,000,000 tons can be mined and machinery is .being installed for the purpose. Tn order to facilitate tho handling of the product a special railway is being constructed to Ea-pailo Ea-pailo station. In the department of Castro another deposit has been located. Samples from this fisld show that triers is a residue of H to 10 per cent of ash. The coal from this region in the northern section of Castro bay, is said to be quite different from that found iu other parts of the state, and is not unlike un-like cannel coal. The mines on the Islaud of Lenmy are being worked with excellent results, re-sults, and preparations are being made to undertake operations on an extensive exten-sive scale. According to F,l Mercario, coal has been found at Mailef, six miles from the central railway station at Yaldivia, and development has been started there. In view of these reports, Chile seems to be almost ready-to take its place as one of the world's coal-producing countries'. |
