Show BUYING OF CORN PUTS UP CBO PRICES j Government Figures Dis-j Dis-j close Unexpected Supply-Held Supply-Held by Farmers. i j CHICAGO. March 7. Mistaken Inference that the government report on farm reserve would j be of a bullish character did a good deal today to send the corn market soaring. Prices closed j strong, 4&c to 4Tc net higher, with May I $1.34 to and Joly $1.296 to $1.29. Oats gained 2c to 2c and provision 50c to $1. Buying of corn on a large scale throughout the day forced the market higher and higher, but just after the finish a moat unwelcome surprise sur-prise came to the traders who had been so eager to purchase. The surprise was the fact that government figures showing the amount of corn back on farms exceeded the most optimistic private estimates. With only the forecasts In view most of today's to-day's buyers apparently believed that any exports ex-ports of corn from the United States would be at the direct expense of the necessary feed supply for domestic livestock. Heavy European orders for meats tended further fur-ther to Increase bullish sentiment and so likewise like-wise reports that the New "York harbor workers' strike seemed to be nearly at an end. Erroneous bullish predictions were'eurrent as to farm reserves of oata as well as of corn. Provisions scored maximum gains, owing chiefly to huge requirements of Belgium. CASH QUOTATIONS.
