WASHINGTON, March 14 Definite plans for extensive experimental work nith aircraft are being worked out by the navy general board, and in their conferences abroad with officials of the British, French and Italian admiralties Secretary Daniels and his technical advisers ad-visers will give particular attention to aircraft development. Congress later will be asked to make a special appropriation appro-priation for experimental work. "Already we are working toward the first transatlantic flight," Mr. Daniels said. "That event is now almost in sight. Our plans are definite and preparations prepa-rations are proceeding smoothly. The flight was ordered because it was a logical step in aircraft development. ' ' Mr. Daniels personally confirmed this outline of the navy's plans beforo he left today for New York en route to France. lie will be joined tomorrow aboard the U. S. S. Leviathan by Rear Admirals Robert S. Griffin, chief engineer; engi-neer; David W. Taylor, chief coustruc-tor, coustruc-tor, and Kalph Earle, chief of ordnance. He expects to return by May 1, after visiting Paris, London and Home. PLAN TO KEEP NAVY ABREAST OF AVIATION. "It is our purpose in the navy to keep not only abreast of aviation in the future," Secretary Daniels said, "but to lead the way in the development develop-ment of this new art. Under the whip and spur of conditions, much was accomplished ac-complished here. The Liberty motor is the most striking instance. It is still unrivaled in its own field that of a high-power aircraft motor suitable for rapid production. That was our war problem production, and we solved it. "Now, however, with the stress of war behind us, our problem is to advance ad-vance the science of air navigation; to explore every avenue of possible development; devel-opment; to build better, faster, safer aircraft from year to year as wo build better ships for the navy. For that purpose pur-pose we must devote ourselves to orderly or-derly experiment in peace times. We must keep in touch constantly with what other nations are doiiig, profiting by their experience and sharing with them the benefit of our own. "During our stay in Europe, wc will talk with admiralty experts on aircraft. Admiral Taylor, who is the navy's rep- (Continued on Page 2, Column 1.) ITLIIES PUNS FOR OEM3! AIRCRAFT ... He will organize or-ganize and direct tho expanded campaign cam-paign of aviation experiment on which the navy is embarking. Abroad Admirals Ad-mirals Griffin, Taylor and Earle will have tho aid of Captain Craven, fresh from the intensive wartime experience with aircraft." The subject of aircraft development was fullv reviewed by the general board .this week with the tbrao admirals who are accompanying Secretary Daniels. Information and suggestions arising -from the trip will be cabled to the board in order that the formulation of plans nd estimates can go ahead without delay. In this connection, Mr. Daniols said: WILL HAVE PROGRAM READY FOR CONGRESS. . V When congress reconvenes we will have a very defiiiito project for avia-lion avia-lion experimentation to present. It will require appropriations for which I in-icud in-icud to asl. I am confident that wo wijl find congress wholly sympathetic -with eur desire to take a forward-looking courso and ready to provide liberally lib-erally the means of carrying on the work. "ft is the navv's purposo to carry nut its projects in harmony with the army and the postoffice departments, and abo with American industry, which esppmled so promptly to our needs during dur-ing the war. Between us, we will crys-lallioC crys-lallioC the lessons. of the war and build .upon them tlioo air fleets of tho future of which now- wo have only visions. JJ |
