Show FEW DRUG ADDICTS POM SERVICE Intelligence Branch Completes Com-pletes Investigation ; One Rejection in Each 2500. Drug addicts found among the men of the "United States called for military service ser-vice are extremely few, according to an official report just made public through the military Intelligence branch of the war department. Facts and figures relative to the drug habit were furnished this branch by the surgeon general's department. They show that there have been only about one rejection re-jection In every 2500 drafted men because be-cause of addiction to drugs in any form. This Is considered an extremely low percentage. per-centage. The statement in relation to the matter has been issued by the intelligence bureau bu-reau In refutation of propaganda stories which have been circulated through the country to the effect, that not less thnn 1,300,000 persons In the 'country are drug "fiends," and that not less than 1.000.00U of these are known in their respective communities. It' has also been reported that men within the draft age have developed the drug hahlt as a means of evading active military service. This story Is branded as absolutely false by the military authorities. au-thorities. The records of the surgeon general's office show that out of a total of S90.592 men examined In the draft up to December Decem-ber 31, 1917, only 40.1 were rejected for drug habit. To this total may be aSded only seventy-six men discharged for drug addiction after induction and enlistment en-listment in the service. The latter figures Include national army, national guard and regular organizations. The figures speak for themselves and brand the reports re-ports as false. |
