Show HALIFAX SCENE OF WILD RIOTING Trouble Caused by Arrest of Seldiers; Companions Attempt Forcible Rescue. HALIFAX, N. S., May 25. The wildest riot in the history of this city occurred tonight, when returned soldiers attempted to rescue other soldiers, sol-diers, who had been arrested by the police. The mob tried to wreck and burn the city hall and police headquarters, headquar-ters, cut the hose when the fire department de-partment arrived, and forced the firemen fire-men to retreat. The mob heldsway until tho garrison garri-son regiment arrived with loaded rifles. ri-fles. Hundreds of marines with loaded load-ed rifles and fixed bayonets, landed from warships, succeeded in dispersing the crowds. Several persons were injured, including in-cluding three police officers. The damage to city hall will amount to several thousand dollars. |
