Show Hi RECLAMATION PROVES SUCCESSFUL Salt Lake, Weber, Davis, Sanpete and Cache Counties Coun-ties Get Benefit. The reclamation of 4000 acres of waterlogged water-logged land in Weber, lavis, Halt Lake, Sanpete and Cache counties, as a war measure, has been completed during the past few months under the direction of Sumner G. Marelts, in charge ot" individual indi-vidual farm drainage work, Utah, and assistant di-iinage engineer to U. A. Hart of t lie federal service. The work has been accomplished as the result of a cu-operative system in which the federal drainage investigation has combined with the county agricultural a gen ts and the 1." tab Agricultural college to drain individual farms and bring laud formerly of little value under a high state of cultivation. This work has been done at an excuse of about JIT per acre to thp farmer, the cost being confined to the digging of the ditches and the purchase of tile. Surveying and directing the work was furnished free of cost to the farmers by the federal department. The success of the project lias been so pronounced and the interest nf the farm-el farm-el s aroused to an extent that two contractors con-tractors have been induced to place ditching ditch-ing machines in opera t ion. These machines ma-chines not only do the work quickly, digging dig-ging drainage ditches to a depth uf about seven feet, but have reduced the cost to about 17 cents a running foot. This is said to be as low as the work can be done under drainage district organization on a large scale. U is contemplated to inaugurate new drainage work in districts where the practice bas not been known, Mr. Mar-get Mar-get ts said yesterday, in order that the farmers may be educated in the value and benefit to be derived from reclaiming water-logged lands and to increase the acreage of reclaimed lands for war pro-d pro-d uction. It is anticipated that in this way, when large government drainage projects are contemplated, little or no opposition will be met with on the part of the farmer. It is estimated that the crops grown on reclaimed lands during the first season will more than pay for all of the expense incident to the drainage, i |
