Show SURE TO COME.. According to announcements made in the nation il house of representatives the second draft will not be put into effect before May or June. This will give tbos3 who are to be called to the colors ample time in which to prepare for service. The delay is doubtless clue to the difficulty in transporting the troops now in cantonments across the i ocean to Ftance, and not because there I is any prospect of peace in the immc- j ciate future. The second call is reasonably rea-sonably sure to bo issued, and it may come before Hay or June. It will come sooner if the cantonments are ready to receive the men. Some people peo-ple firmly believe that peace will be arranged for in a very short time; that the men now in training will never be sent to France, and that ihere will be no second draft. Present indications do not tend to foster that belief, aDd we sco no good reason why false hopes should be raised. Of course, tho war could be stopped at any moment by the German kaiser, but as be has never made the least sijrn that he really de-siied de-siied peace, we fear those who are fondly hoping for the end are doomed to disappointment. It is within the range of the possibilities that the Germans Ger-mans will be beaten by ihis time next year, and that the men called out in tho second draft will not be trained juickly enouh to take part in the fighting at the front, but it mav be taken for granted that they will put in the summer and fall in the army cantonments. |
