Show HAYS CONFERS Willi THE G. LEADERS New Republican Chairman Also Receives Many Congratulatory Con-gratulatory Telegrams. INDIANAPOLIS. Feb. Hi Three members of tho Republican national committee stopped in for a few hours today whilo returning from the convention con-vention at St. Louis for a conference with Will II. Hays, new chairman of the committee. They were John T. King of Connecticut, A. T. Ilert of Kelt Lucky and James A. Hemenway of Indiana. Senator Penrose of Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania passed through late this afternoon after-noon and was joined by Mr. King. Chairman Hays today received hundreds hun-dreds of telegrams of congratulation from Republican leaders in all parts of the country. Among them was one from Colonel' Theodore Koosevelt, which read: "Your election means more to the country and the Republican partv than anything else at this time could have meant. ' ' Mrs. Alice Roosevelt Lonffworth also sent a telegram of congratulation. At a luncheon today attended bv the national committeemen. Governor Goodrich Good-rich and other state Republican leaders, lead-ers, Chairman Hays expressed his gratitude grat-itude for the help" of his friends at St. Louis, and reiterated his determination to deal on the same terms with all representatives rep-resentatives of his party. Ho declared that he did not believe the national organization should support any candidate candi-date for tho presidential nomination. Mr. King said the Republican party has the greatest opportunity in its history his-tory to go before the country with a strong declaration of Americanism, and declared that he favored Theodore Roosevelt as the next Republican candidate can-didate for president. Chairman Hays will leave Monday or Tuesday of next week for Washington Washing-ton and later will go to New York for conferences with party leaders. |
