Show In talking of plans for next year, Judge William Wa.llace McCredie. principal princi-pal owner of the Portland baseball club, which may be In either the Coast, Northwestern North-western or City league next year, depending de-pending entirely upon circumstances, took a nice little slap at Los Angeles, which was also a graceful compliment to the citv of Sail Lake. Local fans are aware that Los Angeles has raised a louder howl than any other i city In regard to Portland not being In j the Coast league next year. In fact, Johnny Powers, owner of the Angels, has i been quoted to the effect that If Port- ; land were retained in Hie circuit he wouldn't bring his team north next season, sea-son, on account of the transportation expense. While not counting on anything for nfext vear until the matter is definitely settled. Judge McCredie said yesterday that If the league started, as he expected it would,1 with the same cities in line, he prooablv would request that Portland open at Salt Lake City instead of Loa Angeles. For years it has been the custom of the t earns to open at San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento. When Salt Lake took Sacramento's place in the league it became the third city where openings took place. Each of the other clubs gets its first choice of opening Bites in rotation. This meant in the olden days that the first choice meant San Francisco, second choice Los Angeles and third choice Sacramento. Sac-ramento. "When Salt Lake came into tbe circuit it remained the third choice, on account of the early opening, which made the climate a decided uncertainty. in fart two or three years ago the season was opened with a liberal covering of snow on the ground. Portland has second choice this year, which, in the natural course of events, means that it would open at Los Angeles. However, with the season shortened, which seems almost certain if Portland is still in the circuit, the local owner figures that Salt Lake City would be a better city in which lo open than Los Anseles. He has figured from a financial finan-cial standpoint and doesn't hesitate ' to come out into the open and say so. Loa Angeles, on the other hand, is entitled en-titled to the opening date here, which Is generally regarded as the beet week of the Portland season. It would seem as if this fact alone would make Johnny Powers willing to keep Portlajid in th circuit again nest year. Wicb any kind of weather he could take enough money out of Portland on his first trip here nearly to cover the expenses of the three trips of the An.zelm here, granting that the season wasn't shortened and one trip cut off. At any rae, don't be surprised to see Portland opn two straight years at Salt "Lake City, if both teams are In the circuit, cir-cuit, something practically unheard of in Coast league baseball circles. Portland had third choice last year and necessarily neces-sarily took Salt Lake, but is voluntarily willing to take a chance on the same city again next spring. Meantime, the judge Isn't worrying over what is going to happen. He knows there is a berth prepared for him in the Northwestern North-western If tho Coast league, having failed to find a California city willing to purchase pur-chase the Portland players and franchise, should decide to come down to four teams. Portland Telegram.
