Show EVERYTHING iS FREE BUT ELECTRIC LIGHT Utilities Commission Ruling Rul-ing Bars Way to Gratis Use of Convenience. One would hardly accuse the Utah public pub-lic utilities commission of being unpatriotic, unpa-triotic, but Yesterday City Recorder Gordon Snow in cheeking the registration regulations discovered that it was necessary that the varipus registration boards of the city should have an office within the boundaries boun-daries which they serve. Two of the city's three boards were so provided, but the board for district No. 2. which comprises com-prises the Second and Third municipal wards, did not have such an office. This b.wrd is headed by City Commissioner & B. Newman. Mr. Newman was told of the situation. situa-tion. "Leave it to me," he said, and took a walk up town. At the Atlas block the management of that structure offered him a suite of offices free of charge for as long a period as thev may be wanted. "We may need them for ninety days," said Mr. Newman. "They are yours for ninety years," replied re-plied the manager. Mr Newman went to the Utah Typewriter Type-writer Exchange oh the ground floor of the building. "I want you to let the government have a second-hand typewriter for about three months." he said to Frank Stewart, the manager. "The government only uses new machines. ma-chines. Here Is a new one you can have and here la a desk and chair. I will have them sent right up," countered Mr. Stewart. At the offices of the Utah Power & Light company Mr. Newman explained to W. - R. Putnam, manager of the commercial com-mercial department, that electric light connections were needed at once. "We will be glad to provide them and give you the current with our compliments." compli-ments." said Mr. Putnam, "but we must have the consent of the Utah public utilities commission." The case was presented to the utilities utili-ties commission. "It cannot be done," ruled that august body. And so the government will be forced to pay for the electric current used in an office, the rent of which and the furnishings fur-nishings of which are donated by patriotic pa-triotic citizens and the help employed in which is volunteering its services. |
