Show ROOT ST MOSCOW S1SJSHERS Response of Soldier-President Evokes Great Enthusiasm. En-thusiasm. i MOSCOW, Friday, June 22. The j American commission, headed by Elihu j Root, today for the first time since their arrival in Russia made the formal ac- j quaintance of the representatives of the workmen and soldiers. Conferences were held with the Moscow leaders of all the political and industrial factions, commonly grouped under the term proletariat. prole-tariat. Within a few hours of the arrival ar-rival of the coirunis6ion Mr. Koot had delivered two stirring addresses, the first to the associated committees of Moscow Mos-cow and the second to the municipal duma, which gathered in special session to greet the Americans. In both meetings Mr. Eoot was warmlv received and his repeated declarations dec-larations that America had faith in Rus sia's ability and determination to wage to the end the war of democracy against German militarism brought an immediate immedi-ate response from all the factions represented rep-resented to the effect that Russia would not Inv down her arms while German autocracy or any other obstacle imperiled imper-iled the continued existence and safety of the newly won freedom of the Russian Rus-sian people. Perhaps the most dramatic and significant sig-nificant episode of the day occurred when a common soldier, who is president presi-dent of the Moscow soldier deputies in the municipal duma, rose in response to Mr. Root's appeal to Russia, and in ringing ring-ing tones said they would do their duty. In answer to. Mr. Root's declaration of confidence in the Russian character and people and his conclusion that people who were willing to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of men for the emperor would be willing to make even greater sacrifices for nationality and liberty, the soldier said: "We have had a history full of sorrow sor-row ; vet we have derived enough strength out of oppression to gain our liberty. How much more strength will we derive from that liberty to carry our purpose through to a successful end ! ' ' The soldier's address evoked wild applause. |
