Show SAYS ENGLAND HAS LESSON IN BELGIUM Officer Wounded at Mona, Praises the Patriotism of Stricken People SpecialCab e to The Tribune LONDON Oct 10 Much attention s being attraoted today by the speeoh made at Tilehurst Reading by Captain Buchanan Dunlop who was wounded at Mons He appeared with his head swathed in bandages having been in jured by a shell He sa d in parti I think England might get a very food lesson from the lnhab tants of ranee and Belgi m All the way as we proceeded through that coun try all the inhab tants turned out and d d all they could for us. They brought us coffee bread and butter c garettes and everything they could think of The ladies even turned out balls of string in case the men might find them useful, and handkerchiefs We advanoed up through this country and then had to ret re through it You can imagine our feel ngs go ing back through the same country that we had previouslv traversed This did not make the slightest dif f erence to the way we were treated by the inhab tants They brought ns coffee and the rest of things just as before Their one desire ap peared to be to help us and they seemed to place the utmost reliance on Great Br tain and our troops, al though they knew that our numbers were small They could not understand why we were retiring but they never seemed to murmur Fugit ves fly ing from their homes were eager to give ns of the food wh ch they were carrying back for the r own con sumption What struck us the whole time was the thought If th s was in Englandl What an awful thing it would be to have an invad ing army n England and all that is now go ng on in France I will tell you just two little stories wh oh will show yon how our men have plentv of pluck and fight loft n them s 1 I was talk ing to an off cer n y own regi ment n town esterda He was also wounded, and he told me about a right on Wednesiaj week when one of h s men 1 ng just n front 0 hm n ler hea v shell fire turned to h n an 1 sa d S r mav 1 ret ret Whyf asked the of fleer ' 8ir replied the man I have been h t three times Here is another little Incident On the very first day we were hold ing a canal bank and d ring the n ght we had orders to ret re hav ing held the enemy off all dav We were to blow up the br dges By some mishap a sergeant and ten men were left on the wrong s de of that canal with the Germans about 200 yards in front We could hear the Germans talking The next morning when we called the roll we expressed sorrow at th nking that th s sergeant and his men must have been capt red In the morn ing when they found they were cut off what d 1 thev dof They did not put up the hands but blazed awa at tn Go mans with the re s 1 that the Gc mans fled and the sergeant and his men got away |
