Show ITER POWER IS NEGLECTED, ASSERTS LANE Secretary of Interior Declares De-clares Utahns Should Display Dis-play More Interest in Bills Before Congress. SAYS MEASURES ARE IMPORTANT TO UTAH Comments on Great Resources Re-sources of State and Urges Action to Insure Quick Development. Special to The Tribune. OGBEX, Feb. 18. ""While William P. .McCombs, chairman of the Democratic Demo-cratic national committee, was in my office a few days ago he made the statement that within six months from the present time this country would be enjoying prosperity it has not known since 1001. I believe he is right. The steel industries arc again operating operat-ing on full time and the coal mines are rapidly approaching their normal output. It is on the condition of these two iudustries that tho general condition condi-tion of this country largely depends." This is the statement of Frauklin Knight Lane, secretary of the United States department of the interior, who passed through Ogden today on his way to San irancisco, where he will represent rep-resent the federal government at the formal opening of the Panama-Pacific exposition. The national official, who was unaccompanied other than by his private secretary, occupied a drawing room on board tho Overland limited, arriviug over the TJmou Pacific at 10:40 o'clock this morning,, His slaj in Ogden was limited to fifteen minutes. min-utes. While not a member of the interstate inter-state commerce commission, Secretary Lane expressed a desire to do all within with-in his power in obtaining freight rates that will contribute to the greater success suc-cess of the Utah manufacturer. On this point the secretary of the interior Haid ho fully realized that Utah had outgrown itself as a self-sustaining community aud that the future of the state largely depended upon its ability to branch out into the outsido markets. mar-kets. Scores Lack of Interest. The sincere concern of the cabinet officer for the interest of Utah was punctuated at one point by criticism of the people of the state for their apparent lack of interest in national measures that be declares to be of special value to the upbuilding of tho west. These measures, now pending pend-ing in congress, are the water power bill and the leasing bill. While both wore drafted for Ihe pariicular benefit of this western country, according to Secretary Lane, nothing is heard from Utah or its representatives in behalf of the measures. Ou this subject he said : It se cm b to me that you people out here in Utah are overlooking some things w h f ch a re d eci d ed I y fa vora bl e to the future upbuilding of the west and especially this sta to right here.
