Show HER JEWELS SAFE. In spito of tho alleged hatred of the Mexican peoplo for Americans, or "gringoes," as they call us, now and thon a case comes to light showing that, after all, they would rather trust a citizen of the United Statos than their own countrymen. A little story printed in Tho Tribune yesterday morning morn-ing illustrates this point. It scorns that when Boar Admiral Fletcher made his attack upon Vera Cruz, General Maas, the Mexican commander, hastily took his departure with most of his men, leaving only a comparatively few '"'Bnipors" behind. After tho firing had ceased, two or threo dayo after tho landing, Sonorita Maas, daughter of tho fugitive general, appeared at Boar Admiral Fletcher's headquarters and declared she 'had been robbed of valuable jewels. Tho American Amer-ican officer immediately detailed some of hia mon to accompany tho senorlta to her father's houso, where marines were on guard. The jewels wcro found in tho family safo, whoro the young woman had loft thorn. Tho sonorita sngely remarked that tho jowels wero safer in the possession of tho marines than with herself, and went upon her way rejoicing. Looting i3 rather a common practice in war time when an enemy's town has been taken, but It la not a vice of .tho men who wear tho blue of Undo Sam in either tho army or the navy. Tho little incident speaks volumes for the d.iscip.lino of tho navy and tho respect of Americans for private property in war time. Perhaps tho Mexicans will know us bottor when the presont difficulty diffi-culty ia settled and normal conditions return to the distracted republic. |
