A report on fuller's earth by Jef-ferBon Jef-ferBon Middloton of the United States geological survey has boon published as an advance chapter from mineral resources for 3012, and copies will be sent to interested persons frco, on application ap-plication to the director of tho survey sur-vey at "Washington, D. C. Tho value of the fuller's earth mined in 1912 in the United States .was $305,522, and Florida was tho principal producer. The principal use of fuller's earth in this country is in the bleaching, clarifying clari-fying or filtering of fats, greases and oils. The common practice with mineral min-eral oils is to dry the earth carefully after it has been ground to thirty to sixty mosh and run it into long cylinders, cylin-ders, through which the crude, black mineral oils nre allowed to percolate slowly. As a result the oil that first comes out is perfectly water Svhito and much thinner than that which follows. fol-lows. Tho oil is allowed to continue percolating through the earth until the color reaches a certain maximum shade. With the vegetable oils the process is radically different. The oil is hoatod beyond the boiling point of wator in large tanks, from 5 to 10 per cent of its weight of fuller's earth is then added, and the mixture is vigorously stirred and then filtered off through bag filters. Tho coloring matter remains re-mains with tho earth, tho filtered oil being of a pale straw color, provided the operation has beon conducted with sufficient care. Oro Shipments.
