The rjucstion 1h scheduled for llnal decision by tho capltol commission at a uesslou to be held this afternoon. Arnold G. Glauquc was tho prlnclp.il speaker at the meeting la3t night. In his address Mr. Ciauuuc said that there was within tho confines of Utuh as large n variety of marbles as is to be found lb anv fltato In the union; that It Is only a question of Mm before th marble resources re-sources of the state are developed r tha.t heretofore the operating nnd development cont of Quarries hud been too great to wanant tho opening of deposits; that now, however, one quarry was open; that at this quarry could bo found marble of any size, any color or any quality, and equal to the Imported marbles. Fair Offer Ts Made. Mr. Glauque paid that it had been charged that tho present operating company com-pany desired to make a sufllclont prollt on Its product to pay the coat of opening Its quarries. This statement he denied and added that'thc company wanted only to make a fair profit. He paid that the company had offered the capitol commission commis-sion a bid to furnish the marble at cost plus 10 per cent, the commission to select se-lect Its own representatives to see that the contract would be fairly carried out. In closing his address Mr. Glauquc said that Utah mnrblo should be selected for tho following five reasons: Because It is equal to any marble In the world. Been use It will open a new and large Industry which will bring large sumn of money Into tho stale. Bocause It will give employment to a largo number of people. Money Will Remain Here. Because all the money to be paid for marble will remain In the state. Hven if Utah marble does cost more, the state will build but one capltol building, and only Utah marble mar-ble should be used. It will be to the credit of tho commission and to the state of Utah to do so. and tho people' peo-ple' of tho Plate will sanction such action. it was reported yesterday that the bid of the company offering to furnish Utah marble oxceoded that of the company proposing to furnish an out-of-lhc-stato product, presumably Georgia, by more than 200 per cent. The bid for the latter ftonc Is said to be approximately $200,000. while I hat for the Utah stone is more than $600,000. it has been definitely ascertained that the bids of both companies are on identical iden-tical fipecltleutlons. calling for the same quality, same coloring and same amount of stone. |
